World Cup 2010 tickets still available

FIFA released another 90,000 tickets on its website and with the currently unsold category one tickets of 75,000, the total tickets available for the World Cup 2010 will be 160,500. There are a total of 2.9 million tickets available for the entire tournament and at this point the stadiums are expected to be 96 per cent full. FIFA is hoping for 98 per cent coverage which will be in the same league as the World Cup 2006 in Germany. The United States and England will be the biggest foreign contingents. Of the 380,000 foreign fans 20,000 are expected to be English and this number corresponds to English fans attendance in Japan and South Korea although it is a significant drop from the 150,000 who attended the games in Germany. FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said, “The number of people coming to the World Cup from England shows that they are big fans – maybe the number one country of football, in Europe at least."

There is some disappointment in that there has not been as much sales in the rest of Africa as expected. “We can definitely talk about a disappointment when we see the number of tickets sold in Africa,” Valcke said.On the whole though, despite the less than expected sale of category one tickets, Valcke said, "The target is to reach about 97 or 98 per cent [of ticket sales], which would correspond with the figures from the past FIFA World Cups and this would make us very happy. We were a bit concerned a few months ago, now we are definitely pleased.

FIFA has allocated all the national football associations 700 tickets per game for their so-called ‘Football Family’. For the English Football League this means FA staff, corporate partners, players families and officials from county FAs, the PFA, the League Managers’ Association as well as Premier and Football League clubs. This is a part of the 12 percent of tickets meant to be sold that is given to every national association in the group matches. The ticket for sales drops to eight percent at the knock out phase.
